Euhedral crystals of gypsum in association with pyrite aggregates and corroded planktonic foraminiferal tests occur in silty clay in a deep sea core off Madras. The environment responsible for the origin of gypsum crystals is discussed. Evidences indicate an authigenic origin for the gypsum crystals. Keywords
